With selling a house being such a stressful experience, many Americans will turn to the power of faith in times of need.

prayer-to-st-joseph-to-sell-houseCatholics and non-Catholics alike have become a part of the tradition of petitioning for the help of Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary and stepfather to our lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Saint Joseph, the patron saint of family, workers, husbands, and real estate, was renowned for his patience, steadfastness, and devotion in carrying out the lord’s work as the foster-father of Jesus Christ

It is amazing how far a bit of faith can go, and whether you believe or not, the history and process of carrying out the prayer of Saint Joseph is intriguing and can provide homeowners with hope when going through the home selling process

Below is an outline of the history of one of the most famous patron saints, followed by a step-by-step guide for effectively carrying out the prayer for Saint Joseph to sell your house.

St. Joseph, the patron saint of real estate

The Pew Research Centre in 2014 estimated that around 20% of Americans were Catholic, showing just how influential the Catholic faith is in the USA.

This has in turn helped to strengthen and share many Catholic traditions, like Saint Joseph’s prayer for selling real estate.

Saint Joseph (San Jose in Spanish and San Giuseppe in Italian) was proclaimed a patron saint in 1870 by Pope Pius IX, although prayers to him go back over a thousand years.

Historians believe that around 1500 AD, a group of nuns who desperately needed to purchase land began burying metals with Saint Joseph engraved on them, followed by prayers to the image of Joseph.

Their prayers were in fact answered, and it is acknowledged that burying the metals bearing the image of Saint Joseph was the nun’s expression of faith and trust in God.

Although nobody needs metals, statues, or anything else to put their faith in God, the nuns felt that this was the best strategy to represent their faith by asking Saint Joseph to help on their behalf with God.

This moment could have been the start of the tradition for the prayer to Saint Joseph which has now been employed for hundreds of years.

It does need to be stated however that people of faith do not ask saints to act on behalf of God, since only God, and by extension Jesus Christ, may do so.

In these instances, we are asking a patron saint to pray with us to God with the hope that their influence may strengthen the prayer.

How to use the prayer to Saint Joseph

The prayer to Saint Joseph is known as a novena, a prayer that is carried out over nine days.

First, purchase a Saint Joseph statue from any local or online vendor. You will then need to dig a hole approximately three feet from the “for sale” sign at the front of the property, burying the statue upside-down and facing towards the house.

Once this has been done, the following prayer can be carried out over the buried statue:

“O, Saint Joseph, you who taught our Lord the carpenter’s trade, and saw to it that he was always properly housed, hear my earnest plea.

I want you to help me now as you helped your foster-child Jesus, and as you have helped many others in the matter of housing.

I wish to sell this [house/property] quickly, easily, and profitably and I implore you to grant my wish by bringing me a good buyer, one who is eager, compliant, and honest, and by letting nothing impede the rapid conclusion of the sale.

Dear Saint Joseph, I know you would do this for me out of the goodness of your heart and in your own good time, but my need is very great now and so I must make you hurry on my behalf.

Saint Joseph, I am going to place you in a difficult position with your head in darkness and you will suffer as our Lord suffered, until this [house/property] is sold. Then, Saint Joseph, i swear before the cross and God Almighty, that I will redeem you and you will receive my gratitude and a place of honor in my home. Amen”.

Additional parts to the prayer

Repeat the above prayer from day 1 to day 9 over the statue of Saint Joseph. In addition, include the following after the initial prayer for each day:

Day 1: “Oh God, guide of those who listen and helper of those who hear your voice, speak to me, as you did to St. Joseph, and help me accomplish the things you give me to do.”

Day 2: “O God, you love your people and bless the ordinary lives we quietly live. As you blessed St. Joseph, bless what I do, however hidden and simple it may be, and let all I do be done with love.”

Day 3: “O God, ever faithful, you remember us always and in time reveal your blessings. Help me trust in you, as St. Joseph faithfully trusted, and never let me lose faith in the wonderful gifts you promise me.”

Day 5: “O God, who loves children, be kind to our children today. Give them eyes of faith for seeing far, a loving heart for welcoming life, and a place always at your side.”

Day 6: “God of our heavenly home, bless our home on earth. Let the spirit of Mary and Joseph rest at our table, shape our words and actions, and bring blessing to our children.”

Day 7: “God, our Father, give your fatherly spirit to those who are fathers now. Like Joseph, give them hearts of devoted love for their wives and children and strength for forgiveness and patience.”

Day 8: “Give shelter, O God, to those who need it, and bring together families divided. Give us enough to eat, and decent work to earn our bread. Care for us, O God.”

Day 9: “Bless all families, O Lord especially those in need. Remembering the life of your Son, we pray for the poor, for those who lack a good home, for those in exile. Grant them a protector like Joseph, O God.”

An important note

As it is said in James 2:14-17, “…faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead”.

This means that the prayer on its own cannot provide anything if not accompanied by honest work.
